Metro-Art in the Metro-Polis
At the turn of the century, there were only five so-called "millionaire" cities in the world. Today there are over a thousand. With the coming century, new underground networks will be set in place, and an ever increasing number of projects undertaken. It is estimated there will be some 150 towns world-wide equipped with an underground transport system of over more than 10 000 km of railtracks. More than 22 billion people use the underground each year. It is a part of our lives and it bears considerable influence upon the quality of everyday urban life. Marianne Stroem s study centres upon the subterranean art and architecture of underground stations, selected from some twenty countries. Forty different cities are represented.
